Lavigerie Drum 2014-2015

Image
The Christian faith was planted in our lands many years ago; "mustard seed" has become a tree with multitude of branches and leaves. It is a great thrill to see that many have heeded the plea to pool their wisdom of God by serving one another. We must constantly bear in mind that our faith started in storytelling. "In the past God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets, but in these last days, he spoke to us through his son (Heb 1:1-2). Beloved writers and readers, the big question that we ought to ask ourselves is that, how are we ourselves empowering our own lives and the lives of others? Solomon in the old testament asked for wisdom from the Lord, what are you as an individual asking of Him today? We are the branches that should bear fruits, what type of fruit are you?. In this regard, all who have contributed an article to the Lavigerie Drum are the visible fruits that we are going to enjoy. Dear readers, feel empowered as you enj...

The Easter Vigil

Image
Christ yesterday, today, beginning, and the end. His are the times and the ages alleluia. On the earth we live as part of the church militant. We cannot wage a war without weaponry or an objective. The weapon is Christ alive in the most perfect unity between us. The objective is, “So that we may all be one.” (Chiara Lubich)  I am so great full that the mother church has embraced us with the feast of Easter vigil mass. In accord with the ancient tradition, this night is one of vigil for the Lord, when he brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt. So on this night all Israelites must keep the vigil for the lord through generations (Ex .12:42) “Blessed are those servants whose master find vigilant on his arrival. (Lk, 12:35). This is a reminder for the faithful to have their lumps burning ready, to be like men awaiting their master’s return so that when he alives he will find them wide awake and seat with them at his table. The night vigil is arranged in four parts ...

Skills and Talents

Image
When one is born, there is no awareness if one has a talent and skill until the advance in age. A talent and skill is something in born and it needs to be nurtured in a practical and authentic manner. Some talents are inborn and others are out of practice which applies the same to a skill. The art of talents and skills need to be practiced and developed out of compassion and passion. It is supposed to be done in a discipline and a consistence manner, in order to glow and shine. We can attend better schools, have high scores in academics, and have all sorts of successful options in life, but without our skills and talents, we cannot make a good doctor, priest, nurse, teacher, student, architecture, pilot, just to mention but a few. Our talents and skills interconnect us with real life experience and make us to serve our people in a good and productive way. It makes us to explore more, advance and enhance our daily lives to earn a living and bond our relationship to the peopl...

What does today’s Youth Want?

Today’s youth is a generation that feels unloved and aimless in a world where they are bombarded with sex, money, power, drugs among many other attractive things. The youth have inherited the hopelessness, pain and the darkness that came with the immoral revolution and the “me generation”. There are many questions in the youth’s minds which can lead one to temptation and sin. Some of them are: When will I have the latest smartphone? When will I have the latest clothes and shoes? What about the latest vehicle in the market? And a house? The general question is, “what can I do to be the richest and most popular person?” The youth have failed to understand that they are rich in qualities, energies and dreams that can totally transform the world if positively used. They should know that the church and the whole society need them and they expect great things from them as future leaders. Let us not follow the way of evil. Don’...

Our Chapel

Image
Remove your sandals... You are standing in a Holy place... The lord says (Exodus 3:5-6) As far as I know most of the religious seminaries and formation houses have a chapel where seminarians, sisters or other people interested do come, go and pay reverence to God. Here in Lavigerie community, we have a small chapel located a few meters from the main gate opposite the parking car yard. One will quickly note that at the main entrance there are two rooms facing one another. On the left, it is a small store where we treasure all liturgical instruments while on the right side it is a sacristy. Inside the chapel there is a beautiful Altar erected at the epicenter while on the right side there is a Tabernacle.  The Tabernacle and the Altar are made out of Africa indigenous tree signifying the blessing God has endowed African land and its resources; the resources, which have potency to actualize something beautiful, like this Tabernacle.  The same re...

Naturalist intelligence ("nature smart”)

Image
With the acquaintance of Palmer Parker’s quote that, we are deeply an interconnected species, who need to embrace the simple fact that we are dependent on and accountable to the ecosphere, members of Lavigerie House embrace the simple premise of being part of a whole and seeing the whole in part of themselves.  This inspiration lies behind the creation of a splendid environment. The flowers that blossom with grace in front of the chapel, the flowers of new respire in front the apartments and the verdant foliage of green grass and green trees disseminate the compound with peace, love and sustenance of its beauty. The beauty personified in our compound serves to offer impressive meditations, and thus a journey to the beautiful. The aptitude of caring for, taming or interrelating finely with our ecosystem is expressible in: We do gardening; where we plant vegetables for our consumption. We also plant fruits such as pawpaws, oranges and guavas. We plant and...
