Mother Kevin, OSF Servant of God
Mother Kevin OSF, formerly Theresa Kearney, was born in Arklow, Ireland. At the age of 20 years, she joined the Franciscan Sisters of St. Mary’s Abbey, Mill Hill London. She was one of the first 6 chosen to work in Uganda with the Mill Hill Fathers. Hence she arrived in Uganda in 1903. She later founded the Congregation of the Little Sisters of St. Francis (L.S.O.S.F) ON 1st May 1923, with 8 aspirants from Uganda and Kenya. This was after Mother Kevin realized the need to extend her services to the people of Africa.
Homecoming: Just before her 80th birthday in 1955, she left Uganda for Boston for Mission Appeal. In her last letter, she wrote, “No matter what happens, I shall return to you, the Lord willing.” She died 2 years later in Boston. Her body was flown back to Uganda, and laid to rest at the Mother House. Her promise to return ‘no matter what happens’ was thus fulfilled.
History of congregation: Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi is the Diocesan Right, with its Mother House in Nkonkonjeru – Lugazi Diocese, Uganda. The aim of the Congregation is “To love and serve God in His Church in His world today, following the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The vocation is “To contemplate God is prayer and share the fruits with others in our apostolate.” The charism calls us to pay special attention to those who are poor and needy spiritually, physically, psychologically and materially.
As followers of St. Francis and our Foundress Mother Kevin OSF, we want to play our role in the Church by being bearers of peace and love of Christ to all we are sent to minister. We try our level best to be women of prayer and to make a special effort to lead others to God by word and deed. Thus, we bring God’s reign to all people on earth. We are 94 years old as a congregation and soon we shall be celebrating a century.
